Why Chronological Age Matters in Psychological Assessment
Psychological tests are built on norms — statistical tables that describe how a reference population performed at each age level. Whether the instrument measures intelligence, memory, executive function, or adaptive behavior, the scoring process starts with one question: what is the examinee's chronological age? The answer determines which norm column is used to convert raw scores into standard scores, percentile ranks, and confidence intervals.
An error in CA, even by a single month, can shift the examinee into a different age band. For a child near the threshold for an intellectual disability classification or a gifted designation, that shift can change the standard score by several points. In forensic psychology, where IQ scores carry legal weight (e.g., in competency or capital sentencing evaluations), even small scoring errors have serious consequences.
Most major psychological instruments — the Wechsler scales (WISC, WAIS, WPPSI), the Stanford-Binet, the Woodcock-Johnson, the NEPSY, the Vineland, and others — require the evaluator to compute CA before scoring. Chronological Age vs Mental Age
Chronological age is an objective, fixed number: the time elapsed since birth. Mental age is a test-derived score representing the age level at which a person performs cognitively. A 7-year-old who answers questions at the level typical of a 9-year-old would be assigned a mental age of 9.
The concept of mental age was introduced by Alfred Binet in the early 1900s for the original Binet-Simon intelligence scale. William Stern later proposed the ratio IQ formula to express the relationship between the two:

Under this formula, a child with a mental age of 12 and a chronological age of 10 would receive an IQ of 120. Lewis Terman popularized this approach in the Stanford-Binet revision of 1916, and it remained the standard method for decades.
Why Ratio IQ Is No Longer Used
Ratio IQ had a fundamental problem: mental age does not increase linearly throughout life. Cognitive performance plateaus in adulthood, which made the formula produce misleading results for older examinees. A 40-year-old performing at a mental age of 20 would receive an IQ of 50 under the ratio method — despite performing normally for their age.
David Wechsler addressed this by introducing deviation IQ in the Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence Scale (1939). Instead of dividing mental age by chronological age, the deviation method compares an individual's raw performance to the statistical distribution of same-age peers, producing a standard score with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. This is how all major modern IQ tests — including the WISC-V, WAIS-IV, and Stanford-Binet 5 — score intelligence today.
Chronological age remains essential to deviation IQ scoring because it determines which same-age norm group the examinee is compared against. The ratio formula is no longer used in clinical practice, but it appears in psychology textbooks and course material as a historical reference point.
How to Calculate Chronological Age for Psychological Testing
The method follows the same convention used across clinical disciplines: subtract the date of birth from the test administration date, then apply the rounding rule specified in your test manual.
Worked Example
- Date of birth: February 18, 2016
- Test date: September 5, 2025
- Years: 2025 − 2016 = 9. September is after February, so no adjustment needed → 9 full years.
- Months: September (9) − February (2) = 7, but day 5 is less than day 18, so subtract 1 → 6 full months.
- Days: 5 − 18 + 31 (days in August) = 18 days.
Full chronological age: 9 years, 6 months, 18 days.
Using the round-down convention, record 9;6 on the protocol. The 18 remaining days are dropped because the 7th month is not yet complete. If the manual requires total completed months, that value is 114 (9 × 12 + 6).
